Editorial Objectives

The Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economies (JADEE) showcases research about the Agriculture and food value chains and their implications for economic and societal development and public policy in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Value-adding activities in agribusiness require substantial investments for agricultural inputs and practices, methods of transport, cold chains, processing, retail distribution and so forth. These farm-to-fork agri-related activities in turn have a profound impact on nutrition, employment, education, poverty reduction, and the maintenance of a sustainable environment. Agribusiness firms along this value chain both in developing and emerging economies currently face opportunities for substantial growth due to factors such as: the rising aspirations of domestic customers, increasing investment and the opening up of government economic policies. There is now the opportunity to develop service offerings as well as new products for domestic and global markets. JADEE is the vehicle for publishing research exploring the challenges, opportunities, and avenues available to emerging and developing economies in the agribusiness sector which is projected to experience continued and significant growth.

JADEE interprets agribusiness as a discipline that studies the food and agriculture system: the individual elements, their interdependencies and their impact. While closely related to agricultural economics, the focus here is mainly on the application of business methodologies to the food and agricultural sector. Original research on topics pertaining to policies, processes and practices in the agribusiness arena is appropriate for this journal. JADEE seeks to serve the needs of academics, researchers, and policy-makers as the leading forum for the dissemination of ideas that probe the synergies between the relevant traditional disciplines - the study of the agricultural food chain and the business value chain - with the ultimate goal of elevating the well-being and livelihood of people in developing and emerging economies. The journal seeks to be at the nexus of science, technology, public policy, and business, all of which interact to contribute to a healthy society and a sustainable economy.

Coverage

Research papers and case studies that are conceptual, theoretical or empirical are welcome. The following areas and topics are examples listed to emphasize the breadth of the scope of the journal.

Areas:

The agri-food value chain system includes primary production (farming), post-harvest processing, marketing and distribution services (domestic and international), consumption and eventual recycling. The system covers more than 20 different industries and many commodity sub-sectors including grain, dairy, oils and fats, fruit and vegetables, confectionery and coffee. These industries are important for providing food but also for income and job creation in agriculture, manufacturing and services. They provide inputs to farmers (e.g. seeds and equipment, training, production and market information), promote entrepreneurship, raise demand for agricultural products and connect farmers with various consumers through processing, marketing, distribution and retail of agricultural products. They have strong backward and forward linkages with other parts of the economy. The progress in agri-food industries is transferred to other sectors through higher demand for inputs, technology, such as packaging materials, transport, communication and quality infrastructure.
