Editorial objective

The Islamic banking and finance industry has grown substantially worldwide. The Islamic Development Bank predicts that the industry will surpass US$2.8 trillion by 2015. Product development and standardization of regulatory practices are the two most important elements for sustainable growth of this industry. Developing human capital and effectively marketing a welfare-based financial system are also critical. Approximately 1.57 billion individuals—nearly 1 in 4 people—in the world are Muslims according to the 2009 Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life report. The growth of universities in Muslim countries and expanding interest in Islamic thought in Western universities creates a receptive audience for an Islamic position on economic and financial matters.

Economics, politics, religious and social affairs fall under the jurisdiction of the divine law of Islam.  Islam has formulated comprehensive ethics governing how business and commerce should be run so that it is accountable to God and the community.  It is important to elucidate how banking and finance markets should fit into this system.  Each component poses a unique challenge in a global business environment that is largely unsympathetic to religious-based values.  The rate of growth of the economies of the Muslim world—and in particular of the oil-rich states of the Arab Middle East—is impressive. Much of this growth has occurred in the banking, finance and financial services sectors. Personal finance trends   show strong growth in these areas and among Muslim communities world-wide.

No journal presently provides comprehensive cover of research in this expanding area. International Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Finance and Management will serve as a central repository for research in the field. It will bridge the interests of scholars and practitioners so that the results of research and product development are brought to the attention of the international financial and business management community.
