Unique Attributes

Founded at the University of Cambridge in 2008, the International Journal for Researcher Development (IJRD) is the first international journal devoted exclusively to the scholarship of researcher development. Its purpose is to further understanding of all aspects of researcher development and related policy and practice across any sector and context, including conceptual issues such as what researcher development is, and (socio-)psychological and socio-cultural issues, such as how it occurs. The interpretation of ‘researcher’ is wide and includes research students and other early career researchers, established researchers, those for whom research is a component of their work, experienced and distinguished researchers, and those who aspire to be researchers.

The journal’s main section, Research and Theory, provides a forum for the dissemination of original empirical research, conceptual analyses, policy analyses, and theoretical perspectives. A two-stage process of rigorous editorial and peer review ensures that articles published in this section meet the highest academic standards, while the Researcher Development in Practice section is intended for the dissemination and discussion of reflective and innovative practice (see Author Guidelines for details). The journal will be of interest to a wide international constituency, including those who are themselves researchers and those with an interest in or responsibility for developing the research capacity and practice of others.

Topicality

Researcher development is fast emerging as a new field of research and scholarship. In the context of higher education it is a key policy issue, and research capacity building and the development of individuals as or into researchers, currently preoccupy institutional leaders, managers and administrators at all levels. In other sectors, too, the notion of researcher-practitioners as leaders within their professions has heightened interest in understanding much more about how researchers develop at all stages of their careers.

Key benefits

The International Journal for Researcher Development not only provides those interested in this new field of scholarship with the opportunity to contribute towards shaping the field and formulating its research agenda, it also informs researcher development practitioners and policy makers at all levels.
