"Notions of Family: Intersectional Perspectives" presents new and original research on gender and the institution of family featuring both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The objective of this volume is to present a framework for understanding the ways in which the salient identities of gender, class position, race, sexuality, and other demographic characteristics function simultaneously to produce the outcomes we observe in the lives of individuals as integral forces in the maintenance of family.

Advances in Gender Research seeks to encourage empirical and theoretical gender scholarship worldwide in order to further the understanding of gender and to promote the application of this understanding to the solution of social problems and the achievement of equality locally and globally.

Advances in Gender Research recognizes thatgender intersects with other social structures, including, but not limited to race/ethnicity, sexuality, citizenship, social class, age, and (dis)ability; and with various institutions, including, but not limited to the family, the state, the economy, the media, and education. Advances in Gender Research seeks well-written articles that place current or historical data in context, critically review the literature in gender-related subfields, provide new theoretical or methodological insights or assess the impact of social actions, programs or movements. The series includes articles that are theoretical, empirical or applied, dealing with any nation or region, or taking a comparative perspective. The series recognizes that gender research is increasingly theoretically and methodologically interdisciplinary and intersectional; and encourages and supports these trends. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

Gender and health, medicine, and reproduction

Feminist frameworks, methods, and praxis
Gender in global and local perspective

The Editors

Vasilikie “Vicky” Demos is Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of Minnesota-Morris. She obtained her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame. She is co-editor of this series and of “Race, Gender and Class for What?” a special issue (2007) of Race, Gender & Class. Her most recent publication (2007) co-authored with Anthony J. Lemelle, Jr. and Solomon Gashaw is “System of Oppression: Ten Principles” in Gender, Race, and Class: Central Issues in a Changing Landscape. Her research is in the areas of the history of sociology, race/ethnicity, and gender, which includes her current study of ethnicity and gender in the United States, Greece and Australia. She is a past president of the North Central Sociological Association and of Sociologists for Women in Society, and she is the recipient of the 2008 Harriet Martineau Sociological Society Award.

Marcia Texler Segal is Professor of Sociology and Dean for Research Emerita at Indiana University Southeast. She is co-editor of this series as well as of Intersections of Gender, Race, and Class: Readings for a Changing Landscape (2007, with Theresa A, Martinez). She has also co-edited volumes of teaching resources available from the American Sociological Association, and she currently serves on the editorial boards of Sociological Perspectives and thegender section of the on-line journal Sociology Compass . Her research, teaching and administrative consulting have taken her to countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia. She is a past president of the North Central Sociological Association and has held elected and appointed offices in the American Sociological Association, Sociologist for Women in Society, and Research Committee 32 (Women in Society) of the International Sociological Association. In 2008 she received the SWS Mentorship Award.
