Significance of this Series

 'Evaluation is the means by which society learns about itself’
(Cronbach et al, Toward Reform of Program Evaluation, 1985)

Evaluation has long entertained lofty ambitions. Emerging in the 1960s and 1970s as a new discipline and a practice (Michael Scriven calls this a ‘transdiscipline’) program evaluation was born of expansive times. Political and economic contexts have undergone numerous changes since then and evaluators have had to respond methodologically and politically. This series is aimed at documenting the responses, publishing thought and action where we see evaluation ‘advancing’. Volumes may also provide milestone statements helping to chart the pathways being taken by this still emergent discipline.

This series and scholastic accomplishment

This is a prestigious series, issued by a prestigious publisher to the highest standards of quality and production. Each volume is expected to be a position statement in its field. Volumes are subject to peer review and quality assurance. The series is published in hard back (library) form and as eBooks.  Emerald promise rapid movement from submission of manuscript to publication within six months.

Themes and focus

The series seeks contributions which reveal evaluation thinking and practices where the discipline is advancing. Advances may come in different forms:

  • Developments in methodology, such as where evaluators embrace narrative approaches or confront the challenge of ethics;
  • Responses to changing contexts, such as where evaluation meets the challenges of the New Public Management or global recession;
  • Where evaluative roles and practices are being reconceived in new fields of action – such as the criminal justice sector or international development;
  • Where we are at an identifiable point of reflection on the role of evaluation – such as in the run-up to the Millennium Project;
  • Where evaluation seeks to position itself in intellectual histories – such as reflecting on the relationship between evaluation and science or evaluation and postmodernism.

An invitation

We invite you to propose a volume in this prestigious series. You may have a theme you wish to explore with others, or you may want to enter into a discussion with the Series Editors in order to discover a theme of mutual interest. You will receive extensive support from Series Editors in framing your proposal and in carrying it through to final submission.

The content outlined below is indicative, and the editors will be happy to receive contributions that are closely aligned to the broad aims of each section, and contributions that cover a single topic or a collection of topics or even topics not listed.
