Editorial objectives

The objective of Studies in Law, Politics, and Society is to provide a vehicle for the publication of scholarly articles within the broad parameters of interdisciplinary legal scholarship.

Whereas other law related publications publish within a single domain--the humanities, social science, or legal doctrine. Studies seeks to bridge those divides. We encourage submissions from a broad range of legal scholars and welcome articles exemplifying different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. We welcome submissions from an international group of scholars.

Editorial criteria

All submissions to SLPS are peer reviewed. We are looking for pieces that advance knowledge in their specific areas of inquiry. We welcome articles of various lengths.

Subject matter may include:

Empirical studies of legal phenomenon
Legal theory
Legal history
Cultural studies of law
Policy analysis
Critical approaches to law
Articles dealing with current controversies at the intersection of law and politics.

Key series audiences

The series will be of interest to legal scholars inside and outside law schools interested in the role of law in political and social life.

About the Editor

Austin Sarat is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science at Amherst College. Professor Sarat is a pioneering figure in the development of legal study in the liberal arts, of the humanistic study of law, and of the cultural study of law. He is also a well known scholar of capital punishment, specializing in efforts to understand its social, political, and cultural significance in the United States.

Professor Sarat founded both Amherst College’s Department of Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought and the national scholarly association, The Association for the Study of Law, Culture, and the Humanities. He is former President of that Association and has also served as President of the Law and Society Association and of the Consortium of Undergraduate Law and Justice Programs.
