Research Awards

We’re delighted that ‘Sociological Reflections on the Neurosciences’ was shortlisted for the BSA Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness Book Prize 2012 for its significant contribution to medical sociology.

What’s more, this volume (Vol. 13 of Advances In Medical Sociology) is now available in paperback.

First published in October 2011, it was the first book to take a sociological approach to this field of biomedicine and quickly established itself as a benchmark textbook and important focus of global sociology.

About Advances In Medical Sociology

Editorial Objectives
Covering birth to death and everything in between, "Medical" Sociology has been one of the most exciting areas of work in sociology over the many decades of this series in Advances in Medical Sociology. Medical Sociology does not 'advance' in a linear way -- rather it grows to incorporate new issues and new concerns. The area of coverage has shifted over time, expanding to encompass issues in deviance and social control, globalization, professions and occupations, gender, science and technology, sexuality, the body and more. This series seeks to document and expand the cutting edges of the field, drawing on sociologists around the globe, who are doing innovative work that falls under this broad umbrella of 'medical sociology'.

Topicality
The theme of each volume is chosen to reflect the newest issues in the loosely connected field of medical sociology. Whether stimulated by advances in the biomedical sciences (i.e. the forthcoming volume on neurosciences) or by issues in the news (i.e. the recent volume on infectious disease) each volume reflects the growth of Sociology itself as our theoretical and methodological tools are brought to bear on new concerns.
