For more information about The Garbage Can Model of Organizational Choice: Looking Forward at Forty, edited by Alessandro Lomi and J. Richard Harrison, browse the Table of Contents.
The year 2012 is the 40th anniversary of the publication of Cohen, March, and Olsen's influential article "The Garbage Can Model of Organizational Choice", which offered a major new perspective on organizational decision making. To celebrate this enduring paradigm, its impact on our understanding of organizational decision making, and the broad streams of research it has influenced, this collection of papers provides a rich demonstration of the influence that the GCM is continuing to have on current research.
Managing Human Resources, edited by Mikael Holmqvist and André Spicer is coming soon.
(Publication expected January 2013.)
Employees are regularly asked to follow rules and procedures (exploitation), yet at the same time being asked to experiment and ‘think out of the box’ (exploration). How is this ‘ambidexterity’ possible? This book investigates this dilemma, which has not previously been explored in any great depth at the individual level. In this volume, the impact of ambidextrous organizations on individuals' working lives is explored, as the authors analyse how employees are affected when required to follow routines, at the same time as they are expected to break these routines.

"Research in the Sociology of Organizations is a unique and valuable resource for organizational scholars. Each volume includes articles by top scholars organized around a central theme – the sociology of entrepreneurship, comparative studies of organizations, change in culture industries, the financial crisis – providing a single point of entry into findings and debates in the contemporary literature. I look forward to every volume"
– Professor Jerry Davis, University of Michigan, USA
Research in the Sociology of Organizations is especially concerned with specifying the unique contributions of sociological theories and research techniques to the analysis of organizations.
In addition to publishing high quality original research, each volume aims to foster debate about the value of new theories and research to the growing international community of organizational studies scholars. The series features work by top internationally-known scholars in the field, providing the flexibility to develop more speculative arguments and theoretical claims that challenge, revise and uniquely apply extant theory in ways that are often not possible in more mainline journals. Thus, theoretical essays and empirical research in Research in the Sociology of Organizations are often more provocative and forward-looking than standard journal articles.
In addition, each volume is designed around carefully selected and interesting themes that aim to facilitate the development of new research communities and perspectives within the organizational studies field.
Research in the Sociology of Organizations is a well established and respected outlet that has been publishing high quality work by top organizational studies scholars for over 25 years.
The esteemed reputation of Research in the Sociology of Organizations stems from the continual publication of high impact and highly cited contributions of well known scholars, as well as its unique positioning as a hybrid outlet that blends the benefits of mainline journals and edited books. Like journals, all contributions are peer reviewed to ensure high quality, and are individually downloadable through your library website, enabling wide distribution and easy access. However, more like edited book volumes, Research in the Sociology of Organizations is less constrained by the narrowly construed editorial procedures of top journals that tend to select articles that are less speculative and provide only incremental advances to knowledge.
The main audiences for Research in the Sociology of Organizations are organizational studies scholars in management, sociology and cognate fields.
Since many volumes address key public policy issues such as entrepreneurship, the operation of professional service firms, or the design and redesign of the field of financial services, many of the contributions are also relevant to a broader set of practitioner audiences.
