Information Page

Research in Social Problems and Public Policy is a peer-reviewed book series whose focus is on the analysis of the potential failure of public institutions to fulfil their obligations to the broader society.

Editorial Objectives of the series

Today most of the "social problems" in a typical textbook will be those experienced by groups that are relatively low in power – the poor, members of racial and ethnic minorities, women, the aged, the unemployed – and those involving the behaviors of persons who depart most sharply from expectations for "normal" behavior, as in the case of criminals, drug users, and those who suffer from mental illness. Research in Social Problems and Public Policy is less interested in reinforcing these past tendencies than in overcoming them. The series is devoted to the sharpening and reshaping of scientific discourse in the area of inquiry implied by its title, involving the intersection of social problems and public policy. In particular, it is interested in the analysis of the potential failure of public institutions to fulfil their obligations to the broader society.

Topicality

Multidisciplinary in nature, Research in Social Problems and Public Policy presents important themes of: social/crime problems and social problems treatment; criminal justice; law and public policy; crime, deviance and social control; courts and diversion programs; therapeutic jurisprudence, restorative justice and alternative dispute resolution; law and society; substance use/abuse and treatment; health and society; and institutional interaction. The articles have a clear connection to the series’ main focus, lying at the confluence of social problems and public policy.

Key Benefits

Essential reading for all academics, researchers and practitioners in its field, each volume offers a collection of papers related to a central theme or idea. The series:

Key Audiences

This influential series facilitates a readership consisting of all interested and involved in the themes outlined above, including: sociologists (e.g. social problems theorists, crime, law and deviance experts, criminologists, social psychologists and medical sociologists); criminal justice professionals and policy makers; legal scholars; alcohol and drug researchers and treatment specialists; public health experts; social workers; public policy makers; court administrators; ethnographers; and researchers of institutional interaction.

Coverage

The Research in Social Problems and Public Policy series is compiled and written by the most highly regarded authors in their fields selected from across the globe. If the common but by no means universal tendency is to focus on the relationships between relatively powerless members of the mass public and the remainder of society, many issues of RSPPP reflect the complementary approach – focusing on the relationships between relatively powerful specialists and the rest of the society. Recent volumes have covered topics such as: Government Secrecy; Integrating the Sciences and Society Challenges, Practices, and Potentials; Equity and the Environment; Long-term Management of Contaminated Sites; The Organizational Response to Persons with Mental Illness Involved with the Criminal Justice System; and Terrorism and Disaster: New Threats, New Ideas.
